Minutes and energy cost per thousand square feet are averaged figures for a flat, unobstructed lawn, so steep ground, many islands, gates and trimming around fences can add half again. Fuel figures assume ordinary gasoline and oil prices and ignore repairs, blades and sharpening, while a hired rate quoted per visit rarely includes a seasonal minimum or a small service charge. Use the break even wage as a conversation starter with a local contractor rather than a quote, and get three written prices before deciding.
Mowing is the one lawn chore everybody prices in Saturdays rather than dollars. A push mower season on a suburban lot is forty five hours of noise, and the cash cost of fuel and wear is small enough to feel free, which is exactly how hire rates get justified in both directions. This calculator separates the two: what leaves your bank, what leaves your calendar, and the hourly value at which the contractor's quote becomes the cheaper option. Both numbers are honest, only one is money.
Every figure scales from thousands of square feet, because that is how both mower productivity and hire quotes are priced. Minutes per cut come from a machine rate times your lawn size, and the season multiplies that by the number of cuts, which is where a push mower quietly becomes forty five hours.
Cash is fuel and power plus the mower spread across its working life, an honest but narrow definition that excludes blades and repairs. Full cost adds your hours at the value you set, and the hired total is the visit rate times cuts. The most useful line is the break even wage, the hourly value at which your own time makes hiring exactly equal, and it is usually higher than people expect.
Typical time and energy per thousand square feet, with the season hours and cash that a thirty cut lawn produces on 5,000 sq ft.
| Machine | Min per 1,000 sq ft | Energy USD | Season hours | Season cash USD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gas push | 18 | 0.20 | 45 | 30 |
| Gas ride | 7 | 0.12 | 17.5 | 18 |
| Battery ride | 7 | 0.07 | 17.5 | 10.50 |
| Robotic | 0.5 | 0.05 | 1.3 | 7.50 |
| Manual reel | 25 | 0.00 | 62.5 | 0 |
Use it when deciding whether to keep mowing after a new baby or a longer commute, when comparing a robot quote with your current habit, when pricing a rental property's grounds, and when a contractor's number feels high. Pair it with the mower capacity calculator for work rate, the lawn area figures in the garden area calculator, the sprinkler run time calculator for what the season costs in water, and the garden watering cost calculator for the rest of the lawn bill.
In cash, almost always, since fuel and mower wear on a suburban lot run to a few tens of dollars a season against hundreds for a service. Once your hours are valued at anything realistic the gap narrows sharply, and the break even wage line tells you exactly where it closes.
Your after tax hourly earnings are the strict answer, since that is what the hours cost you. Many people use a lower figure for yard work they enjoy, which is a legitimate preference rather than a saving, and the honest move is to run both numbers.
Twenty to forty cuts covers most temperate lawns, with the high end for bluegrass and ryegrass in a wet season and the low end for slow fescue or a dry climate. Contractors on a monthly contract may cut only twenty times and leave the lawn taller for longer.
Because they price a route rather than a lawn, with travel, setup and minimum visit charges spread across the stops. A tiny yard on the edge of a route costs the operator more per cut than a larger one in the middle of a dense neighborhood, which is why small lawn rates per thousand square feet are higher.
Rarely on cash alone, since electricity is cheap and a robot costs a great deal to buy. It pays in hours and cut quality, with daily passes that clip clippings too small to see, so judge it against the break even wage rather than the fuel line.
Only if the hired service charges extra for hauling them, which many do as a bagging surcharge. Mulching into the lawn returns nutrient and organic matter and costs nothing, and extension services consistently recommend it over collection unless thatch is already a problem.
